USA – -(Ammoland.com)- Looking for something unique? Back in 2013, Cabot introduced a gun we simply called “The Damascus” and it turned heads. Well, we've continued to push the envelope and if you appreciate quality 1911's we have something special again.

The Cabot Gun’s Damascus Ladder Deluxe is the perfect intertwining of grit and sensuality – inspiring widened eyes, a quickened heart and immediate carnal reaction of raw desire. It's confidence embodied in art, a culmination of collaborative effort between tradition and the cutting-edge.

Unique to the supremely elegant Damascus steel slide is a sculptural texture which is as much an aesthetic addition as it is a deliberate consideration of combining form and function. Cabot has developed a super-etching technique, which when applied to the Damascus Ladder Deluxe’s slide turns the entire top-half of the pistol into a tactile surface.

A sign of wealth since biblical times, Damascus steel was used to create the weapons of Kings and Chieftains. Valued for it's beauty and strength, Damascus steel was not only an indication of power by it's holder but was also considered to contain mythical properties. It is with this inspiration we have crafted this 1911.

The grips for the special edition Cabot 1911 offering of this model are also a work of art. Pattern welded Damascus, commissioned from Master Blacksmith Jason Morrissey and crafted in-house each set of grips contains unique Damascus Art.

Hendrick Outdoors Starts Building Custom Rifles

Weatherford, TX (Ammoland.Com) – Hendrick Outdoors LLC, a Texas hunting and wildlife company, has started building custom rifles for private individuals. Michael Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Outdoors LLC, started building custom rifles for Bullets & Broadheads, his TV show that aired on The Sportsman Channel & Pursuit Channel. He then began building similar rifles under the name Guardian Tactical for local law enforcement agencies. Hendrick is now expanding his business, Hendrick Custom Rifles, to include private individual sales of custom AR-15s and bolt guns.

“We started with building ARs for the local agencies and law enforcement, and have recently received more orders from private individuals,” said Michael Hendrick. “We talk to people one on one about what they want – color, scope, stock option – to build their custom rifle.”

Usually, custom rifles can start as high as $4,000.00, said Hendrick, but we start our base models as low $1,750.00. Those who want a custom rifle will be able to choose the stock in the color or finish they desire, including choice of barrel, caliber, length, rate of twist, and fluting patterns.

MASP Industries Continues with Expanded “Heroes Salute” Military Branch Glock

USA – -(Ammoland.com)- Coming off the success of their first line of custom “Fallen Series” Thin Blue Line Glock pistols, MASP Industries is continuing to stand out in the custom Glock scene by releasing their newest line of “Heroes Salute” military branch Glocks.

These Heroes Salute line follows the same trend of the thin blue line Glock with custom slide cuts, paint jobs, enhanced billet trigger, and a bad ass pelican case to store your Glock in.

Not only is their attention to detail and design apparent with their newest Military Glocks, so is MASP's dedication to continue being a company that gives back to its community. With each and every custom Glock package sold, MASP is continuing to give 100% of the proceeds to families of fallen heroes.

When we spoke to their president Tigh Mumgaard he put it pretty clearly “We are able to give protection to the buyers of the gun, and in turn, peace of mind to the families that have lost so much. Thats the goal of our ‘Fallen Series'…. allow people to give back to those who gave everything for our safety”

To understand MASP as a company is to understand the reason and goal of the “Fallen Series” Glocks. MASP has long since been a company based on being able to provide protection to its community all while maintaining an honest, fair, and charitable business model. MASP has been around since 2013 producing custom rifles, charging handles, and an open door gun shop serving the needs of their customers.

A peak into their building shows the dedication and success they have been able to achieve by filling their Nebraska based machine shop with almost one million dollars in CNCs, Lathes, and laser cutters. Their shop is constantly filled with the sounds of progress, creativity, and cutting edge designs, all the while working non stop to continue to be Nebraskas leading custom gun manufacturer.

MASP Industries

Their “Fallen Series” Thin Blue Line and Military “Heroes Salute” packages on available now on their website. If supporting a company with core values rooted in honesty, integrity, and quality is something you're interested in, look no further than MASP Industries. JOHANN FANZOJ´s unbelievable “Four-Barrelled Rifle-Shotgun”

JOHANN FANZOJ Four-Barrelled Rifle-Shotgun
JOHANN FANZOJ Four-Barrelled Rifle-Shotgun

Austria – -(Ammoland.com)- An astonishing technical tour-de-force, from the conception, design & crafting of this MASTERPIECE over a 6 year span,” smiles creative director Daniela Fanzoj representing Johann Fanzoj gunmakers, still in disbelief of this monumental undertaking, “something that I will see happen only once in my lifetime in our workshop”.

The basis for the design and construction of this extraordinary four-barrel firearm was that of a client’s specific request and fantasy of paring a side-by-side double rifle (Cal. 9,3/9,3X74R) with an Over-and-Under shotgun (Gauge 20/20/76mm) to be transformed into one single firearm.

The customer required that the Vierling fire four times in succession, with “hot” barrels; The platform should be a robust, reliable mechanism that would guarantee inherent quick handling characteristics – then quickly reload and continue in the same sequence, which in other words demands that the sporting weapon have ejectors for all four barrels!

“At this point it was definitely time to hold up the STOP sign – and run,” recalls Daniela Fanzoj, which the firm did not do, but rather “we took the bull by its horns, dug into this challenge and built this incredible weapon”. The result is a stunning and unsurpassed intricate mechanism, also being an object of culture and worth(value), which exhibits an amazing level of performance.

Four barrels, H&H style sidelocks, 4 individual automatic ejectors, did little to lessen this impressive sporting arm’s responsiveness and wonderful balance. Massive, without a doubt, but not “heavy” at all with a weight of 3,8kg this sporting weapon handles magnificently.

It was an enormous task to design and build, as well as join and regulate the barrels twp-times-two in order that they would shoot together at the same point of impact, in sequence – first the 9,3mm barrels then the shotgun barrels simply by pushing the barrel selector forward, the shooter continues his regiment with the 20-gauge barrels. Automatic ejectors for the shotgun barrels facilitate quick reloading for additional four shots.

JOHANN FANZOJ

“Which it does without hesitation; what a pleasure of a very specific, unique nature to fire in quick succession a quadruple series in sequence from this amazing, functional piece of High Art.”

What seems like a paradox – a sacrilege – in the very traditional world of luxury gunmaking, is in fact a well-considered, top-rate engineering and design effort, pairing the latest high-tech materials with fascinating Old-World-craftsmanship, with the single goal of producing the finest individual pieces for the most discerning and individual of sportsmen – ultra-customized tools for the adventure of a lifetime.

Hardy Rifle Engineering Custom Rifles, Something A Bit Kiwi

Waitomo Caves, Waitomo, New Zealand
Waitomo Caves, Waitomo, New Zealand

New Zealand – -(Ammoland.com)- Nothing worth doing is ever truly easy, and shooting long distance is no exception. Doing it well requires a high degree of accuracy and precision, both of which require patience and dedication.

Most of my firearm related writings like those I do for CRPA’s Firing Line Magazine focus on new case developments, firearm-related legislation, or regulatory enforcement issues. But this time I wanted to do something a bit different. Because every now and then it’s good to remind ourselves of what we are fighting for.

An Unexpected Journey

In March 2017, I had the privilege of visiting New Zealand with my wife for an epic 15-day adventure. We rented a car in Auckland, downloaded a few audio books by J.R.R. Tolkein, and started our drive south. Words alone cannot truly describe how magnificent and beautiful this country is. Should you ever get the chance, I highly recommend a day trip to the Waitomo Caves where you can see thousands of glowworms light up the dark like stars in the night sky.

But I digress. During our stay, we visited family on my wife’s side who happen to live on the north island. Our conversation eventually turned to my line of work. When it did, they suggested

I visit their friend Dan Hardy, who owns a firearm manufacturing company also located on the north island. Naturally I was intrigued, so we arranged a visit the next day.

Getting there was a bit tricky at first as the facility was intentionally hard to spot. For what appears nothing more than a farmhouse surrounded by trees from the road hides a massive state-of-the-art firearms factory.

Hardy Rifle Engineering Factory, NZ (Exact Location: Classified)
Hardy Rifle Engineering Factory, NZ (Exact Location: Classified)

Dan Hardy founded Hardy Rifle Engineering in early 2006 while serving in the New Zealand Army as an Armourer / Weapons Engineer (yes, they spell things differently down there). When his service contract ended in 2007, he began working full time as a custom gun maker.

Hardy Rifle Engineering initially made a name for itself in the suppressor market. Unlike the U.S., suppressor use in New Zealand is encouraged and largely unregulated.

Anyone of legal age can walk into any gun store and buy a suppressor in New Zealand, no NFA paperwork, no tax stamp, and best of all, no anti-gun Hollywood hysteria. Shocking, I know.

For the rest of the peasants living in the U.S., its Hardy’s carbon fiber wrapped barrels that are making a splash. Using the same carbon fiber found in the spars and spreaders of America’s Cup racing boats, he wraps his barrels using a patented Nanotech that spreads all loading and stress over the entire laminate. What do all those fancy words mean? Essentially, the resulting dampening of barrel harmonics leads to an extreme level of shot to shot consistency while simultaneously providing improved heat dissipation coupled with lighter weight over standard metal barrels.

Hardy Match Grade Carbon Fiber Barrels
Hardy Match Grade Carbon Fiber Barrels

While touring the factory, I knew I had to have one of these guns. I was already in the market for a general-purpose hunting rifle, and what better way than to get a fully custom rifle tailored to my needs.

We discussed options, and I ultimately settled on a 300 Win Mag with a 24” barrel in a Tikka T3x action. The rifle would come complete with a carbon fiber stock and Nightforce optic, both of which would sport a hydrographic dip in a unique bone antler camouflage pattern that Dan himself suggested. I was giddy with anticipation, but there was one thing I had to do first.

Hardy Rifle Engineering Custom Rifle in 300 Win Mag
Hardy Rifle Engineering Custom Rifle in 300 Win Mag

Importing a Firearm into the U.S. Sucks

Yes, importing a firearm into the U.S. sucks, even by California’s anti-gun standards. In addition to dealing with U.S. Customs, I had to employ the services of a licensed firearms importer willing to assist me with the necessary paperwork, for only they could submit the required ATF Form 6 on my behalf.

Nearly every FFL I contacted, however, flat-out refused to assist or never bothered responding to my inquiries.

It had been months since returning home, and a feeling of despair began to set in. But before giving up completely, I sent out one last call for help to Bill Ortiz, Vice President of Compliance for Turner’s Outdoorsman. It was the best decision I could have made.

Bill, with his extensive industry knowledge and network of connections, put me in contact with John Anderson, the import/export manager for Legacy Sports International, Inc., in Reno. John was extremely helpful right off the bat, and I cannot thank him (and Bill) enough for his assistance. All I needed to do was provide a detailed description of the rifle and he sent off the paperwork to ATF for approval. Once approved, I was ready to order the rifle and have Dan start production.

Another wait. This time, however, I knew the rifle was coming. It wasn’t long before Dan sent me an email asking if I wanted to see photos of the rifle before it arrived in the U.S. (he didn’t want to spoil the surprise). But I had waited long enough, and the photos did not disappoint.

Fully assembled, the rifle tips the scales at 8.1 pounds. To put that in perspective, a magnum caliber T3 Lite weighs just under seven pounds off the shelf—without any optic, rail, or muzzle brake. The extreme lightweight coupled with the power of the 300 Win Mag makes this one very capable hunting rifle. All that needed to happen now was for the rifle to clear customs and be processed by a California licensed dealer. Naturally, I had my local Turner’s Outdoorsman do the DROS, and 10 days later, the rifle was on its way to its new home.

There Are Many Like It, But This One Is Mine

Eager to take her out for a spin, I hand loaded some Barnes LRX and got to work testing various loads the next weekend. Was it the tac-driver I expected it to be out of the box? Well . . . no, at least not at first. But I was sure of one thing—my new rifle was not to blame.

A super-lightweight rifle like this is very difficult to shoot well. Unlike heavier rifles which can be extremely forgiving of subtle movement, the lack of weight makes it very difficult to maintain a steady hold. When I did make a mistake, the rifle wasn’t afraid to let me know. And as my first belted magnum cartridge, it took me a while to work up a consistent load. Having traveled halfway across the world, I thoroughly cleaned and applied Loctite to the rail screws and re-mounted the optic using my own scope installation kit (complete with torque wrench). Any issues beyond that rested entirely on me.

After experimenting with various loads, I ultimately switched to a lighter weight Barnes TTSX for increased bullet stability. Lastly, I tested various shooting positions and methods for using my bean bag rest until I found what worked. The end results were nothing short of spectacular.

Shooting the Hardy Rifle Engineering Custom Rifle in 300 Win Mag
Shooting the Hardy Rifle Engineering Custom Rifle in 300 Win Mag : 3-Shot Grouping (About .25 MOA) @ 100 Yards

Whether it be navigating the firearm importation process, developing hand loads with consistently low standard deviation, or achieving .25 MOA groupings, anything is possible with a little hard work and dedication. But none of the rewarding experiences such challenges offer would be possible without the right to keep and bear arms. And its rewards like these that make me appreciate what I am fighting for.

I now have a 130 grain, 3700 FPS laser beam ready to put some meat on the table. And while there may be many Tikka actions like it available, it is truly one of a kind. Rick Travis, Executive Director of CRPA, has invited me to join him on a bear hunt later this year, and I intend to hold him to that invitation. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll also get the chance to see New Zealand again and try out one of Dan’s suppressors.

USA – -(AmmoLand.com)- The U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis have competed in their annual service academy rivalry for 128 years, and custom-firearms designer High Caliber Gifts has created a Special Edition rifle in tribute to the traditional rivalry.

President Dwight David Eisenhower, a West Point Graduate, commented on the classic rivalry, saying, “The Army and Navy are the best of friends in the world 364 1/2 days a year. But on one Saturday afternoon…”

The High Caliber Gifts Special Edition features a custom-engraved Henry Golden Boy Silver .22 with custom scroll engraving, 24-carat gold inlay and special serial numbers recognizing the rivalry.

The first series of rifles honor the Army’s 14-13 victory in 2017 but custom rifles can be ordered recognizing any single game in the history of the rivalry, including Navy’s 24-0 victory in 1890 or the 2018 game from December 8, 2018.

The engraving on the right side of the receiver features 24-carat gold engraving of the box score of the 2017 classic and a “GO ARMY BEAT NAVY” 24-carat gold inscription.

The left side of the receiver features scroll engraving surrounding the above-referenced quote from President Eisenhower and the 24-carta gold inscription “Black Knights” in recognition of the victorious Army Black Knights.

The Henry Silver Boy .22 features a 20″ blued octagonal barrel, American Walnut stock and nickel-plated receiver cover, buttplate and barrel band. The Silver Boy features the legendary smooth Henry lever action and 16-round capacity.

Cabot Guns

Fort Wayne, Indiana –  -(Ammoland.com)- Founded in 2011, Cabot Guns has been producing premiere, state-of-the-art 1911 style pistols constructed to aerospace precision standards. Now the company has commenced work on extra-terrestrial pistols.

Building on their success from setting a world record earlier this year for the highest price ever paid for a new pistol, Cabot is now set to shatter records with an offering of a mirror image set of pistols constructed from a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite.

“We wanted to raise the bar again,” says Cabot founder and President Rob Bianchin, “The pistol set will be a modern work of functional art and the ultimate set of luxury guns.”

The out-of-this-world pistol set consists of two precision manufactured guns. The twin right and left handed 1911 style semi-automatic 45’s tentatively to be called The Big Bang Pistol Set. Cabot previously introduced pistol grips constructed from meteorite, but the idea of constructing a complete set of guns from meteor is unprecedented.

Earlier this year, Cabot acquired a 35 kg portion of the prized Gibeon meteor which met the size characteristics for the project from famed meteor hunter and expert Robert Haag. The meteor, dated to an age of 4.5 billion years, was first discovered in the sub-Saharan part of Africa now known as Namibia in 1838. It is believed to have landed on Earth during pre-historic times. Not only is the age and metallurgical composition of the Gibeon meteor fantastical, it is considered the Cadillac of meteors in large part because of the aesthetic Widmanstattten pattern exhibited but the meteorites grain pattern once acid etched. Tiny portions of the valuable Gibeon meteor has been used by jewelers such as Rolex, but the scale and complexity of the pistols is ambitious.

“It’s both romantic and fascinating to imagine that this meteor traveled across the heavens for four billion years before landing on Earth and is now being transformed into Cabot pistols,” states Bianchin.

Cabot will display a sampling of gun components made from meteorite at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, the industry’s major trade show from Jan 19 to 22, 2016. The Big Bang Pistol Set will make their public debut during the NRA Annual Meeting and Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in May.

The pistols will likely be sold at auction and without a doubt will be the crown jewel of any museum or private collector interested in either meteors or firearms. Cabot has been offered $250,000 from a collector based on concept alone but estimates on the value have ranged from $500,000 to over $1,000,000.

Prized meteor such as the Gibeon is sought out by collectors and traded by the gram. The scale and use of the material to this extent of making a high precision functional firearm has never been attempted before.

Meteorite is hardly an optimum material for firearms, so numerous technical matters have been overcome to construct the pistols using advanced aerospace techniques to make the pistols fully functional.

To merely cut the meteorite, a three-dimensional laser scan of the meteorite was created to plan the cuts required to make each component of the pistols in a process analogous to cutting a rare diamond. George Dante, a world renowned taxidermist and environmental artist who has been called Michelangelo of Taxidermy by National Geographic has been retained to create a special gun case and display for the pistols. Additional details about the pistols will be revealed by Cabot over coming months.

Cabot pistols have already garnered an elite following of owners who include royalty, prominent foreign heads of state, celebrities, rock stars, and 1911 enthusiasts alike. As a precision shooting instrument, Cabot 1911’s have been employed by Brian “Gunny” Zins to win two consecutive NRA National Pistol Championships and the Cabot NRA National Center Fire Championship in the shooting discipline of Bullseye.

Cabot Guns were first described as the “Rolls Royce of 1911’s,” by S.P. Fjestad, Author and Editor of the Blue Book of Gun Values, the “bible” of gun reference. Fjestad has also taken the position that a set of Cabot mirror image pistols, The Presidentials (2014), were the finest non-engraved pistols ever built in the United States.

The Cabot Guns team takes pride in workmanship and obsessive perfection to the most extreme levels of the American can-do attitude.

“We’ve had a meteoric rise to the top of the luxury firearms industry, and it’s only appropriate that we now make pistols made from a meteor,” says Bianchin tongue in cheek.

Photos and additional information on The Big Bang Pistol Set will be posted on Cabot’s Instagram page, @cabotguns.

Greeley, PA -(AmmoLand.com)- The latest and popular trend in handguns is exciting new finishes that gun enthusiasts feel best matches their personality.

In keeping with this trend, Kahr Firearms Group has created yet another custom finish with their new Black Tiger Stripe Desert Eagle in both .50 AE and .44 Magnum.

The Desert Eagle .50 AE is a gas-operated, semi-automatic pistol with a 7-round capacity in .50 AE and 8-round capacity in .44 Magnum. Both guns measure 10.75” in length with a 6” barrel. Slide width is 1.25”, height 6.25” and the weight with an empty magazine is approximately 4 lbs. 5.8 oz. in .50 AE, and 4 lbs. 6.6 oz. in the .44 Mag.

It has a trigger reach of 2.75” and a sight radius of 8.5” with the 6” barrel. The construction of the Desert Eagle utilizes the latest CNC machine technology providing exacting specifications with tight tolerances creating a work of art in a precision firearm. The grip is anatomically formed and provides an ideal hand seating angle for two-handed shooting allowing for comfortable, rapid and accurate firing. The Weaver style accessory rail easily allows for aftermarket optics and scope rings.

“While there are many people that appreciate an unadorned pistol, there are still those that feel they need something more – something that complements their personality,” stated Frank Harris, VP of Sales of Marketing. “To address those fans who want something ‘flashier’, we have introduced our handguns in multiple colors, polished gold or chrome and even animal prints. The Black Tiger Stripe Desert Eagle was first exhibited at the 2016 SHOT Show and already we anticipate it will be one of our more popular models.”

The MSRP on the Desert Eagle DE50BTS is $1922 and the Desert Eagle DE44BTS is $1895. For more information about Magnum Research products, visit www.magnumresearch.com.

Witt Machine

Fort Garland, Co. -(Ammoland.com)- Muzzle brakes have been around in various forms for many years.

Originating on artillery, then finding their way on to large caliber assault rifles and eventually in many forms for small caliber firearms.

Designed and installed properly they serve to reduce the felt recoil or ‘kick‘ that is all too well-known to any shooter of large caliber, magnum or ultra-mag rifles esp.; this “kick” being responsible for inflicting more than a few black eyes and bruised shoulders.

Until recently your options for adding a muzzle brake to your rifle were were few if any depending on the rifle.

You could either gamble on a “clamping” brake that would likely fly off on the first shot, leaving behind gouges in your barrel from the set screws; the ones you tightened until you thought they were going to break. Or if it wouldn't compromise the value of the rifle you could get your barrel threaded and use one of the generic threaded brakes that usually do little to reduce felt recoil; and only then if you know a local gunsmith you can both trust and afford.

Witt Machine Custom Clamp-On Muzzle Brakes

Manufacturer Witt Machine has changed all of this with their Custom Clamp-On Muzzle Brakes that they can “make to fit almost any rifle“; offering shooters an excellent performing muzzle brake with several benefits that set them well apart from those offered by other manufacturers.

By appearance alone, it is obvious that this is not your typical muzzle brake; the usual design that merely dumps the barrel gasses out of a couple of large holes in the side of the brake almost exactly as the bullet exits the muzzle.

Witt Machine's Clamp-On Brake is designed with five ports on either side and twenty .078″ ports on the top of the brake; the bottom has no ports at all. While most of the barrel gasses are released out of the side ports as the bullet clears each ‘stage‘ of the brake, highly-effective, Witt's design provides a minimum sixty percent reduction in felt recoil. At the same time, a smaller percentage is released out of the corresponding top ports, which helps to minimize muzzle rise. These work together to not only make shooting more comfortable, but also facilitates quicker and more accurate follow-up shots.

For most rifles, felt recoil is reduced to the point that the shooter can relax and stop ‘anticipating‘ that next kick! as they pull the trigger.

Beyond the benefits of this design Witt can custom manufacture one of its MB1 Clamp-On Muzzle Brakes to fit nearly any barrel without a front sight and guarantee it will stay on! Witt also guarantees no change in accuracy or POI.

MB1 Clamp-On Muzzle Brake : http://goo.gl/wJEAmb
MB1 Clamp-On Muzzle Brake : http://goo.gl/wJEAmb

This is with absolutely no gunsmithing necessary and no alterations to the firearm required.

All they need are a couple of accurate measurements and the caliber of your rifle. Asking for both the barrel diameter at the muzzle and at 1-1/2 inches back, allows Witt to cut each brake to exactly match whatever taper a barrel may have. This perfect matching makes it possible for the brake to stay firmly clamped in place, while doing no damage to the barrel. Brakes can be made for any caliber and for barrels up to .900″ in diameter; yes they really mean it when they say they can make a brake to fit almost ANY rifle. They will even remake a brake for you (after providing some additional guidance) even if you just simply ‘messed up‘ your measurements. That said, they are there to answer questions to help you get it right the first time.

Each Witt Machine MB1 Clamp-On Muzzle Brakes is made to order, finished in your choice of three finish options and usually ships just 2-3 days after you place your order.

These brakes are CNC milled from 416 stainless steel bar stock to provide a lifetime of use. Brought to their final finish in a vibrating tumbler, the brakes are offered in smooth finished stainless or for a small additional charge, with Graphite Black or Flat Dark Earth Cerakote; these optional coatings are heat finished for maximum durability. Installation is simple, quick and only requiring a smear of Blue Loktite and a 5/64″ hex wrench; they even send some extra screws.

Witt Machine's Custom Clamp-On Muzzle Brakes – model MB1 start at just $89.00 and are available directly from Witt Machine's web store: www.wittmachine.net

There you will also find a detailed “Muzzle Brake FAQ“, information about how properly measure your barrel and lots more.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield review and range test.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield
Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield

AmmoLand Gun News

USA –  -(Ammoland.com)- Since 2012, the Smith & Wesson (SW) M&P Shield has proven to be a very good concealed carry (CC) pistol.

Recently, the SW Performance Center sent me the new ported-barrel version of the Shield for me to Review.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield

Like a lot of folks, I was anxious to hold it, try it out, and learn about the porting and see if it met my needs. Some readers and students wanted to compare it with the original version they already owned and make a decision about whether to get the ported model, since they were pleased with the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield they already had. Some asked me to review it, so I was anxious to do that and then report my opinions and evaluation of the ported version to you.

Some questioned the necessity for the ported model and asked some very insightful overall questions.

Are there any unique or different features with this version? What are the features that make this gun stand out from the original Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield and are they worthwhile? How accurate is it? Is the enhanced trigger press noticeably smooth and crisp? What about the trigger reset? Does the porting really help and is it necessary for this concealed carry (CC) handgun? Are there important negatives for it? Would this Ported Shield be good to use for CC for me and what affect does the porting really have? How do I rate it now relative to the other striker-fired carry guns?

First, I want to provide you the Smith & Wesson Performance Center Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield's specifications and some of its features. Overall, it generally fits my 8 key CC factors and my criteria for my top CC handguns. I evaluate in-depth with specified drills and then rank my Top 21 CC guns in my recently-published book “Concealed Carry & Handgun Essentials.” It includes the original Shield and 20 other top carry handguns. Here I present a brief review and report on the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield in 9mm.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield Specifications
Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield Specifications

Here are just 10 of my Criteria and factors I use for evaluating any handgun, so I will use them for the Ported Shield. In addition to my criteria, there are other subjective features that may be appealing for some, like a certain style, mag release location, action, caliber, appearance, number of mags included, type of sights/modifications, bore axis, rail, non-porting, included extras like a holster and pouch, customer service, etc. So, I combined these into my last Miscellaneous criterion. I assigned a total possible point score of 10 points for each of my 10 criteria for a total possible score of 100 points. You can certainly add your own additional criteria and preferences or subtract any of mine.

Here are mine:

  • (1) Accuracy and Reliability- Performs well without reoccurring malfunctions and stoppages and results in consistent, accurate target hits with a maximum of a 3″ inch hit group at 7-15 yards for concealed carry;
  • (2) Trigger Press maxiumum of about 5.5 pounds or so – lessens force applied for less movement & better accuracy- and press that is crisp and identifiable (TRAIN to be Trigger Safe);
  • (3) Trigger with short travel distance (a short travel distance increases the speed the trigger can be fired) and
    easily identifiable and short reset point; Trigger with a smooth consistent press for every shot (less need to transition between presses & make adjustments);
  • (4) Barrel length of 3.0″-4.5″ (primarily for concealed carry);
  • (5) Sights that are basic & simple (easy to use & see–I like Fiber Optic fronts); fast target acquisition; for my purposes– adjustable for windage; Night Sights for low-light situations;
  • (6) Proper Gun Weight to minimize recoil (I prefer about 25 oz. or less for personal defense);
  • (7) Caliber match to my needs, characteristics & abilities (consider medical & physical limitations); 9mm is my preference;
  • (8) Capacity -adequate for use & feature tradeoffs- usually want at least 8-10 in a 9mm magazine for carry;
  • (9) Ergonomics – Hand Comfort and Grip Fit, controls easy to work and easily accessible; rounded, low-profile;
  • (10) Miscellaneous – Overall Finish, fit, & quality appearance; mag release location; ambidextrous controls;
    accessory rail as required; excellent customer service with friendly & helpful representatives; ease of disassembly-assembly; Hard Case; Extras (like holster & pouch), etc.

There are several characteristics, pros and cons, and criteria to include and consider and you make your own tradeoffs according to your priorities, preferences, and defined needs and use.

RANGE TEST : Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield with Sig Sauer 9mm Elite Performance Ammunition

I shot about 150 rounds of quality Sig Sauer Elite V-Crown ammo in 115, 124, and 147 grain weights in FMJ and JHP rounds through the Ported Shield, so the gun was not fully broken in. Thanks very much to Sig Sauer for providing the Sig Sauer 9mm Elite Performance Ammunition for field test ammo. Below are my evaluations for each of my 10 criteria for my concealed carry purpose. Recognize this old geezer is not a top expert shooter by any means. I wanted to check the Shield for malfunctions and performance with quality ammo in various weights.

Sig Sauer 9mm Elite Performance Ammunition
Sig Sauer 9mm Elite Performance Ammunition

Without a doubt, the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield in 9mm has great ergonomics, was very comfortable in my hand, and was accurate and reliable. There were zero malfunctions, stoppages, and problems and the various weights of Sig Sauer ammo performed flawlessly. Shooting at various retention positions and stances at dusk, the porting did not concern me, but I would like to also shoot it at nighttime. When I shot it, I did not notice any metal fragments or gunshot residue on me. Also, when observing up close my students shooting it, I did not notice the muzzle flash or any observable particulates coming from the ports. Shooting it from close retention positions and from the hip did not cause me any problems or concerns. I had zero reliability and performance issues and it was accurate.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm Barrel Shield Ports
Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm Barrel Shield Ports

The V-angled ports on the front of the slide and barrel seemed to reduce some of the recoil and muzzle flip. It did perform somewhat better than some of my other similar short-barreled, polymer, lightweight 9mm guns. Recognize that most 9mms do not generally have that much recoil anyway.

Rather than read or listen to some of the unfounded and second-hand stories about how porting is not necessary or may burn your shirt off from the flash, answer some of the uncertainties by handling and shooting a ported handgun for yourself. I did and tried to answer for myself such questions as: Does a ported gun perform better than a non-ported gun? What are the pros and cons of ported slides/barrels? Is there significant residue, particulate, or flash from the porting? Because of the variety of ported gun models and even the differences among any one ported model, you really have to experience and determine these answers for yourself. Decide for yourself by handling and experiencing firsthand a ported handgun.

Below are some of the things I experienced when shooting the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield:

  • (1) The porting did seem to reduce the muzzle rise when I shot it, which allowed me faster follow-up shots;
  • (2) Porting the top of just about any slide/barrel redirects some of the hot, expanding gases in a different direction which affects the recoil force. The angling of the ports helped redirect the residue away from me and I was not bothered by any possible flash or residue. I did notice the front portion of the ported slide did have just slightly more residue than some of my other 9mm guns, but not a problem at all. And I did experience somewhat less recoil (not significantly with this short 3.1″ barrel) with the Ported Shield;
  • (3) The porting of the barrel and slide did seem to help keep the front of the gun down when shooting and helped me keep my sights on target better. Perhaps, due to the muzzle not rising as sharply. I liked shooting the somewhat heavier 124 grain and hollow point loads.
  • (4) Without a doubt, it was somewhat easier than some of my non-ported guns on my weak carpal-tunnel wrist condition. But, not sure if there was that much of a difference to be significant, given the usual low 9mm recoil.
  • (5) CAUTION: Be careful when shooting a ported barrel/slide from a retention position near your body or from a close combat stance, since the hot gases, powder, and particulate under pressure might cause injuries from that particular gun.

Overall after my range experience, the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield impressed me as a quality, very accurate, and very reliable carry gun, with a nice comfortable grip and very nice fiber optic sights.

At the range, I first shot 30 rounds fast fire at 10 yards with tactical mag reloads and all hits but one were in the 7 to 10 rings. I was happy with the 3-3.5 inch group sizes overall. Over several distances it proved to be accurate. Below are hits on one of my targets at 10 yards from my range field testing of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm with Ported Barrel Shield Test Fire Results
Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm with Ported Barrel Shield Test Fire Results

Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield Range Test Results for Each of my 10 Criteria:

(1) The Accuracy of the Ported Shield was very good for me at distances of 7, 10, and 15 yards, given my aging eyesight. My groups at each of the distances were about 3.0-3.5 inches for the first time I ever fired the gun. Not great, but adequate for me. I used my Modified-Isosceles Stance, a two-handed grip, and shot Sig Sauer V-Crown 115 grain and 124 grain JHPs and Sig Elite FMJ ammo. I preferred the 124 grain hollow points… 10.

(2) The Trigger Press averaged about 6.5 pounds with 4 readings from my Lyman Electronic Trigger Pull Gauge. This was exactly what the manufacturer indicated, but I wanted a little lighter and shorter press. This is personal preference, but I know some of my recommended carry guns have lighter presses. I analyze and compare them in my recent book. The Ported Shield trigger press was crisp and felt good… 9.

(3) The Trigger had a tactile and very identifiable and consistent reset. I could feel it and it felt very nice and was pronounced. My shots were consistent each time and I could easily recognize the reset point. It was an excellent shooter and I really enjoyed shooting it… 10.

(4) The 3.1-inch Barrel with the ported slide and lightening cuts helped control muzzle flip and the recoil. The narrow width and short barrel helped make the Ported Shield very concealable… 9.

(5) The Fiber-Optic Front and Rear Sights were very nice and helped my sight alignment and sight picture acquisition. The green fiber optic front sights really made them stand out for my weak eyes… 10.

(6) The light ported slide and overall 19 ounce unloaded weight was just right for a concealed carry gun… 9.

(7) It was easy and comfortable to shoot the 9mm Caliber in the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield. Recoil was very easy to control. It digested the various weights of ammo easily without a single malfunction or stoppage… 10.

(8) There were two magazines included one with a 7 round Capacity and one with an 8-round capacity. I wanted a third, but there are tradeoffs for the price. The 8-rounder is not the best for CC, but the 7-rounder is fine and my medium-sized hands were accommodated… 9.

(9) The Ergonomics of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield were very exceptional. Its small width and narrowness fit my hands great. The grip texture was not too aggressive and was not too smooth, but just right for me to have a firm and solid purchase. I could easily reach all the controls like the magazine release, manual safety, and slide lock lever, without turning the gun or adjusting my grip… 10.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm with Ported Barrel Shield
Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm with Ported Barrel Shield

(10) Miscellaneous. As always before shooting any new gun, I disassembled, lubed and cleaned, and re-assembled the Ported Shield before I shot it. It was not necessary to press the trigger to disassemble it. At first, I did have minor trouble reassembling the gun because it was so very stiff and tight and the slide lock would not engage, but I just oiled it more and muscled it together. After shooting it, the Ported Shield did loosen up and I was able to easily reassemble it then. The price of the gun is kept reasonable, partly because it ships in a box, not a hard case. It does not include a holster, mag pouch, third mag, loader or other accessories… 8.

Total Points = 94 out of 100 Possible. I definitely RECOMMEND this handgun for one of your concealed carry guns, especially because of the fiber optic sights and great trigger.

The Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P 9 Shield' reliability, excellent ergonomics, great trigger, reduced muzzle flip with the ported barrel, and accuracy were very impressive to me. This is just my personal opinion, so try it for yourself. I hope this review of the Ported Shield, single-stack 9mm has helped you gain some information you did not previously have. Consider that this is just my point of view with limited live-range fire and using only 150 rounds of ammo. Like always, I recommend that you shoot any handgun yourself before you purchase it. Decide on your criteria, how you will primarily use the gun, and what features are important to you ahead of your range time. Then critically evaluate the gun YOURSELF per your criteria and purpose, with standard drills (several mentioned in my book), with various ammo types and brands, over an extended break-in period of about 500 rounds. Remember, safety first always.

Continued success!

LOS OSOS, Calif. – -(Ammoland.com)-  Apex Tactical Specialties has once again teamed up with the hottest trio of custom gun builders on another Dream Gun build for the Brownells Dream Guns Project.

The result of the collaboration, a one-of-a-kind M&P C.O.R.E. 9mm, will be showcased in the Brownells booth (#3401) during the 2016 NRA Show in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Following on the popularity and notoriety of our first collaboration, Brownells asked us to put together a second Dream Gun, this time for display at the 2016 NRA Show in Louisville. We’re excited to present the result of our latest group collaboration to the tens of thousands of show attendees who, like us, all have a passion for firearms,” said Scott Folk, vice president of Apex.

Getting the band back together for this second Dream Gun build for Brownells, Apex called on the talented Doug Presson of DP Custom Works, Mike Sigouin of Blowndeadline Custom and Damon Young of SSVI to give the M&P C.O.R.E. Dream Gun its distinctive one-of-a-kind look.

The Brownells Dream Guns Project was started in 2011 to help feature the wide range of parts and accessories available from Brownells that customers can use to upgrade and customize their own pistols, rifles and shotguns.

To date over 100 Dream Guns® have been built and are available for review at Brownells.com.

Apex’s contribution to the build was a suite of key performance parts that have made Apex the go-to company for M&P upgrades. Included in this build are the company’s newly released patent pending Apex Grade 5.00” Gunsmith Fit Barrel, patented Flat-Faced Forward Set Sear & Trigger Kit, with the “Red Flatty” anodized trigger sold exclusively by Brownells, the Failure Resistant Extractor, patented Reset Assist Mechanism and Apex 10-8 Performance Polymer Base Pads.

Additionally, Apex outfitted the pistol with a Catalyst Extended Magazine Release from 21 Century Gunfighter and a slide-mounted Viper Reflex Sight from Vortex Optics. Also contributing to the build was flashlight and weapon light manufacturer Inforce which supplied one of their popular APL 200 lumen pistol lights.

However, it’s the work of DP Custom Works, Blowndeadline Custom and SSVI that gives the pistol its unique appearance. DP Custom Works machined the slide, lightening it and adding side and top scales. Pulling from a Cerakote color palette consisting of NRA blue, a custom mixed blue, midnight bronze, graphite black, titanium and a custom mixed yellow, Blowndeadline Custom created a finish that will be immediately recognizable to fans of the popular game Borderlands as that of fictional weapons manufacturer Torgue. The finishing touch is the signature look of SSVI’s 360º texturing, hard edge bordering, undercut and trigger guard texturing, as well as forward reference point texturing.

The upgraded and customized Apex M&P Dream Gun is valued at over $3,000 and will be on display throughout the 2016 NRA Show in the Brownells booth and is sure to garner a great deal of attention from show attendees.

$4.5 Million Dollar Cabot Guns Meteorite Pistols Unveiled

Cabot Guns

Fort Wayne, Indiana -(Ammoland.com)- Cabot Guns, the all-American gun company and industry-leading purveyor of luxury handguns, has unveiled this past weekend at the 2016 NRA Annual Meetings and Convention in Louisville, Kentucky a highly anticipated pistol set constructed from meteorite.

For four-and-a-half billion years, the Gibeon meteorite flew through the depths of space. When pre-historic man discovered its remains in sub-Saharan Africa, they used the metal to make some of mankind’s first weapons.

Thousands of years later, Cabot Guns has repeated the feat, transforming a 35kg (77-lb) chunk of Gibeon into a mirror-image pair of left and right-handed working pistols named The Big Bang Pistol Set.

“Craftsman and meteorite collectors have long-prized the Gibeon meteorite for the beauty of its Widmanstatten crystalline pattern,” Cabot Founder and President Rob Bianchin says. “Luxury goods companies have used it to make watch faces, jewelry and other artistic objects. This is the first time anyone’s ever made a functioning mechanical device out of the material.”

Working with meteorite is no small feat – from a metallurgy standpoint, the material lacks perfect uniformity, not to mention the hundreds of tiny extra-terrestrial inclusions blasted into the Gibeon meteorite's interior during its journey to Earth.

Cabot Guns used X-ray photography, 3-D modeling, CAD-CAM design, aerospace construction techniques, electron-beam technology, and endless hours of careful craftsmanship to create two matching (left and right handed) out-of-this-world specimens based on John Moses Browning’s legendary 1911-style pistol design.

Each component was laboriously planned, tested and painstakingly cut to incorporate both the exterior bark (regmaglypts) and interior of the meteorite as design elements.

The aesthetic finish of the pistols is Cabots’ homage to the various states that can be drawn from this rarest of material. The Widmanstatten pattern was developed by the very slow cooling of the planetesimal core at a rate of a few degrees per million years. “Drawing out the Widmanstatten from the material through acid etching is an art itself,” say Cabot COO and lead engineer, Michael Hebor. “It has a will of it’s own.”

The result is an aesthetic tour-de-force — from the prized Widmanstetten pattern adorning both major and minor surfaces to the high-polish grips and judicious use of the meteor’s “bark” on the trigger face and grips. And yes, the guns work.

“We test-fired both guns at our Indiana facility,” Bianchin reveals. “It was even more nerve-racking than the first time we cut through the meteor. But they shot. Everything worked exactly as it should.”

What is price for perfection? “We’re listing them at $4,500,000,” Bianchin says, “which is the current record for the most expensive firearms ever sold. Worth every penny.”

In addition to introducing the meteorite pistols, Cabot Guns presented a Sandrin knife constructed from the space age material tungsten carbide adorned with meteorite handles .

“The Sandrin knife is the perfect compliment to the guns,” states Bianchin. “Crafted to tolerances measured in parallelism of 0.0002 inches, the knife is a work of art unto itself — and by far and away the most precise knife ever made by man. We’re calling it The Big Bang Knife.”

Cabot Guns will be making Sandrin tungsten carbide knives available to the public starting in June.

“In the last five years, Cabot Guns has made a meteoric rise to the top of the luxury firearms industry. It’s only appropriate that we now make pistols made from a world famous meteor,” says Bianchin tongue in cheek.

Kings, Pharaohs and conquerors have historically carried — for both ceremonial and practical purposes — weapons of unmatched construction and aesthetic appeal, constructed of rare and exotic materials. Perhaps now a modern sovereign may carry at their sides and in their hands a weapon with no earthly equal.

USA –  -(Ammoland.com)- Thumper is my pride and joy, and now one of my all-time favorite rifles, named on its maiden hunt: an over-the-counter NM Black Bear license (I had to hunt something in 2015!)

The average black bear harvested in NM is between 150-225 lbs. I was over-gunned on this hunt. In dramatic fashion I witnessed Thumper earning its name.

Thumper started as a Christmas gift in 2014 when my brother gave me a stripped X-10 AR-10 receiver from VDC Armory LLC, and said we would build it however I wanted and with whatever parts I wanted to put on it. (Full disclosure – he owns VDC Armory and designs custom AR Rifles).

I thought on it a while and researched a caliber I thought would be something different and fun. I decided on building it as a .338 Federal. I called him up and told him my plan. There was a long pause on the other end. When he spoke he asked me if I was sure that could be put into an AR-10 platform and he would ask the Gun Smith details about that caliber.

They had not yet built anything chambered in .338 Federal, and why the heck did I want that? Well, just prepping for a dream if I ever make it to Alaska hunting.

After a couple months of casual searching I found an in-stock quality 18” .338 Federal barrel from JP Enterprise.

My brother called in a favor to Witt Machine & Tool and had a custom sized muzzle break (their Muzzle Rise Eliminator – MRE) made to fit the barrel.

We decided on a 15” Slim Quad style hand guard and Mission First Tactical furniture.

Soon Thumper was born (they use in-house “Birth Certificates” to describe a custom build. So it’s only natural to say Thumper was born.)

Next we discussed what hunting optic I needed. It is clear that the .338 Federal caliber is NOT a long distance caliber, so a high powered optic would probably be a waste of effort and money.

As my brother describes this caliber: “…within 400 yards its Thor’s Hammer. After that it is like calling in artillery…”

Leupold & Stevens has been VERY supportive of our initial efforts with ARHunters.com and so we decided to try the Leupold 1x4x HOG Plex and their one piece scope mount. He told me their Armorer did NOT like test firing Thumper and described it kicking like a 12ga. I didn’t think a 12ga kicked that bad.

When I got it I thought the recoil was more of a push than a kick, and is rather enjoyable. I told you this is now one of my all-time favorite rifles. I broke in the barrel, got it zeroed, and was very happy with it. I was obliterating milk jugs of water at 300 yards in dramatic fashion.

I plan on having Thumper with me on many hunts. I just need to get within 400yds.

USA -(AmmoLand.com)- Many hunters develop a close bond with their primary rifle. Over time it becomes more to them than just a firearm and a tool of the harvest.

It becomes a very personal possession – a trusted companion on every hunt. Because of its quality of design, materials, and craftsmanship, it stands the test of time and continues to prove to be more than up to the task of bringing home the harvest without fail.

Such a trusted rifle becomes an extension of the essence of who we are and a symbol of our will to survive – and to be free.

Truly, such a special rifle is as much a trophy as the rack of horns or game head on the wall in the den. Each time it’s taken from its case and handled, it quietly reminds of those hard hunts endured to earn that meat in the larder and the horns on the wall. Yes, a good rifle becomes more than a mere tool, in time it becomes a cherished trophy, too.
